Commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the MLK Assassination with the Dallas SCLC

In December 2007, a local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(SCLC) was reorganized and chartered in the city of Dallas. This social change organization was founded in 1957 on a national scale by civil rights leader and minister, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As we embark upon the forty year following his untimely death on April 4th 1968, The Chairman, President, Executive Board and the members of the Dallas Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference cordially invites you to for the Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of The MLK Assassination on Friday April 4, 2008 beginning at 6:00pm.
This celebration will commence with a Citywide moment of silence at 6:01pm to honor the time of Dr. King's assassination and will be immediately followed by a Memorial March that will begin from the Fair Park Entrance at the intersection of Robert B. Cullum Blvd and Martin Luther King Blvd to the Martin Luther King Center at 2922 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.. We will conclude with a Prayer Vigil to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.
The SCLC organization was the vehicle used to launch the Civil Rights Movement to the national stage following the successful bus boycott of the Montgomery Transportation System in the late 1950s. It was during the early meetings of this group, nonviolent mass action became the adopted strategic cornerstone and the founders also determined to make the SCLC a movement open to all, regardless of race, religion, or background.
Today, the SCLC is a nation-wide organization comprised of chapters and affiliates with programs that affect the lives of all Americans: north, south, east and west. Its sphere of influence and interests has even become international in scope because the human rights movement transcends national boundaries.
Reverend Derrick Bowman, the Pastor of Faithway Fellowship Baptist Church of Hamilton Park is the president of the local chapter of the SCLC. We currently have approximately 50 members and meet once a month at the Martin Luther King Center at 7:00pm. Please contact Rev. Bowman at (972) 792-0240 or via email at dbowman4715@hotmail.com for more information or to support the local chapter. Please RSVP with our SCLC secretary, Earnestine Brooks, for the event at erniebrooks@sbcglobal.net.
